Health, safety & environment

Protecting the health and safety of our people and the environment is of the utmost importance to Syngenta. We have well-established policies and management systems on the wide range of health, safety and environmental (HSE) issues we encounter in our operations.

Everyone at Syngenta is responsible for health and safety. Ultimate accountability for establishing and monitoring the HSE Policy lies with the senior management.

Syngenta published revised HSE Standards in 2008, clearly defining the high standards we must maintain. Our ongoing commitment to ensure our managers understand exactly what is required for a safe and healthy workplace reinforces our industry-leading approach.

For information on our HSE activities and performance in 2008, see health and safety performance and environmental performance.

Syngenta is also developing third party guidelines that will provide consistent HSE and ethical standards for all suppliers. We conduct risk assessments of new crop protection suppliers, based on HSE management as well as quality and continuity of supply. Suppliers are audited based on their potential risk before qualification and regularly afterwards. In addition, we have an established program of HSE audits for all Syngenta production sites. See supply chain.

Another important focus for Syngenta is protecting the health and safety of the communities we operate in. Our stewardship programs promote the safe use of our products by people in rural communities. See safe use.
