Focus areas
We regularly review our corporate responsibility (CR) activity and performance to understand how we can best address the issues that are most relevant to our business, and most important to our stakeholders.
Syngenta engages with stakeholders to identify existing and emerging CR issues of concern to them. Our CR panel makes informed judgements to prioritize these issues according to social concern and relevance to our business, and sets priorities which are presented to the Board.
We carried out an assessment of our focus areas in 2006, and reassessed
these in 2007 when climate change was added as a priority. In 2008, our
priorities remained consistent and we focused on setting out our long-term
strategic direction on sustainability issues, which were presented to
the Board.
Our focus areas have been identified as:
- Access to technology and innovation to improve agricultural productivity and rural community welfare
- Efficient land and water use in agriculture and soil conservation
- Biodiversity, conservation of species and genetical biodiversity
- Product stewardship, for the safe and efficient use of our products
- Greenhouse gases emissions from our own operations and throughout the agriculture value chain, including reducing energy consumption and making biofuels more efficient
- Creating a stimulating work environment where diverse backgrounds are valued, talents are nurtured; and meeting our aim to lead the industry in workplace health and safety.
These issues shape our CR agenda and can also be clearly seen in our
CR reporting in the other sections of this website.
